The word fetish often refer a case where an individual’s sexual desires and behaviours are fixated onto a specific object, such as shoes or feet. For one to be diagnosed with a fetish, a desire for the focus must occur persistently over a period of at least six months and it must create personal distress. A fetish can’t be considered a an issue unless the individual is bothered by it or it gets in the way of forming normal relationships. People could end up have fetishes for anything, from the usual silk panties, leather, feet to the more unusual cars, HIV etc.

A fetish begins when a person has learned an association between a particular object and sexual pleasure. When an object arouses a person, they psychologically interoperate it as being sexual in nature. Sometimes a single sexual encounter with the object can leave a lasting impression which is interetated as a fetish. Of course, not all fetishes develop so quickly. Some people might require repeated encounters with the object and endure pleasure to develop the fetish.  So to answer the question, fetishism is something that one would acquire through experience and learning.
